Therefore, as HODS meet together they should have a common set of experiences as HODs to discuss. This is, of course, impossible if they have all approached the job in a self-directed manner. Often this has developed under the guise of professionalism, but there is usually little that is really professional about a vague and/or uncoordinated approach to the school’s academic progress.

Meetings will have purpose if the leadership of the school defines direction and establishes reasonable process

Resistance to reasonable process is unprofessional and not in the best interests of HOD or staff within the department. If meetings are silent or not resolving matters, talk directly about the hidden agendas. Seek clarification about the bigger picture and discuss process that can prove professionals are at work together. Celebrate success and find the voice to discuss inadequate meetings. Do not legitimise poor process or behaviour. Disingenuousness alienates the professionals within your school and empowers the cynical.

Remember to meet for a need that is shared by all. This will improve your agendas. Do not place staff in situations where they resolve matters against the interests of their staff without school needs defining the rules of conversation.
